Sarah Palin: Paul Revere Warned The British

Sarah Palin’s bus tour took her to Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday. While visiting Paul Revere’s home, the potential presidential candidate botched the history of the famous midnight ride.

Of Paul Revere, Palin said, “He who warned the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms by ringing those bells and making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free.“

Revere, of course, warned the colonists of Charlestown that the British were approaching on the night of April 18, 1775 using lanterns (“one if by land, two if by sea”) – not bells.

Paul Revere after being captured and questioned that night by a British patrol did in fact tell the British that the colonial militias, who had been alerted, were waiting for them. He warned them that they were not going to be able to just march in an un-arm them. Try reading Paul Revere's own writings and learn some history before criticizing Palin! Sarah Palin was correct in her statement! That is just a historical fact!

Dennis. Are you stupid?. Using the line "back up your facts", you don't have to with this one. Dennis you can find this in any collage level history book, biography, autobiography & memoirs. He was in fact captured by the British, and at gunpoint he told them everything. He was one of American histories greatest traitors, and for some odd reason a lot of people don't know this. I studied this when I went to collage, so before anyone tries to have a comeback to what I said actually look it up, so you don't sound like a moron like Dennis here.
This proves how low intelligence has come to now a days. Also shows how Left-wing liberal minded the media is. You don't see them badgering Obama and all his screw ups he's had since his term, which have been too many to count.

Warning shots and bells as he is riding through town. She is NOT correct at all. Nice try.

Is it poor comprehension of just plain stupidity. If I would paraphrase Sarah Palin, she warned the British that whatever they do, they cannot justun-arm the Amedricans. For me it means that despite the British campaign of intimidation, the Americans will not disheartened and fight.

Brad,

Which 'collage' did you attend?

What did your history books have to say regarding warning bells, shots as related to Paul Revere? How about the Second Amendment and historical context?

Does your misuse of a suffix in 'histories' - the plural - in lieu of an apostrophe - the possessive - ring a bell for you?

Poor spelling notwithstanding, your liberal grammatical recklessness torpedoes your shot at academic authority. For a conservative, you sure use fuzzy-headed historical arguments.

It is evident you didn't major in History Brad because cherry-picking your facts makes you appear like the Bogeyman you are so appalled by.

According to the Paul Revere Heritage Project, an initiative of the Boston University Graduate History Project, "The Redcoats had set temporary roadblocks as a security measure and on their way to Concord they encountered British soldiers...Revere was captured... The British held Revere and interrogated him with a pistol on his chest. He was asked about the plans of the militia and where they kept their ammunition. When asked where the Patriots were hiding he told them the truth and replied that they had 500 militiamen in Concord protecting them and 1500 coming. As they rode towards Concord he was told that if he tried to escape he would be shot." "A History of the United States (to 1877): William, Current and Friedel, says "on the road from Concord back to Boston the 1,000 troops along with 1500 more who met them at Lexingotn , were harassed by the continental gunfire of farmers hiding behind trees, rock and stone fences. ". So, it would seem that Ms. Palin is not entirely incorrect.

"Revere, of course, warned the colonists of Charlestown that the British were approaching".

This statement is also wrong. Revere did not warn colonists in Charlestown, but he began his ride from there and headed west to warn residents in Cambridge, Menotomy (Arlington), and Lexington, and was caught before he could reach the Britsh target of Concord. William Dawes was the rider who made it all the way and might have become legend if Longfellow could have found a way to rhyme "hear" with "Dawes".

Guys, if you google palin's response to a reporter who asked her if she realized shes wrong, you'll see that she gave him this political roundabout answer that included none of the facts that you are backing her up with. Just because it coincidentally works out in some esoteric part of history doesn't mean we should attribute that knowledge to her. If a blind man can wildly guess that the sea is blue, should we trust him with crossing the street on his own?

Don't get me wrong.....Ms. Palin is an idiot ! Spell that with a capital "I".

Technically, an "American" did not exist in 1775...
Whether you define the 'birth' of America by the signing of the Declaration of Independence or the end of the American Revolution, in 1775, anyone within the colonies (English settlements) were considered, the 'British'.

I love people trying to find ways to defend her absent minded floundering. She was speaking on Revere's midnight ride which was in fact to warn the colonists of the British's arrival. Nothing more, nothing less, and she still managed to screw it up. But then again, she did have to be taught American history in a hurry when she was chosen as a VP candidate, because as she clearly demonstrated... she knows none of it.

Actually, the historical references that I've seen do mention church bells ringing and the fact that the British were trying to seize arms that were hidden in an ammo dump. She is fairly accurate given that it was an off the cuff statement by a politician.
