Poll finds pride in military, but not for Afghanistan, Iraq wars

America marks the 10th anniversary this week of the Afghanistan conflict, the longest running war in the nation's history. And since the first U.S. troops headed to the mountains and valleys of the Hindu Kush in October 2001, the United States entered yet another war in Iraq.

"These wars, this time period has been unique in our history," said Paul Taylor, one of the authors of a study published Wednesday by the Pew Research Center. "This has been the longest period of sustained conflict in our history and the fight has been carried by the smallest share."

Russia, China veto UN resolution on Syria

Russia and China have vetoed a UN Security Council resolution threatening action against Syria's deadly crackdown on protests, dealing a blow to US and European efforts to isolate President Bashar al-Assad regime.

Amid new deaths in Syria and new threats of individual sanctions, the veto sparked the outrage of European nations, which proposed the resolution, and the United States, which said the council had "utterly failed to address an urgent moral challenge."

Brennan Center: Millions Of Voters Impacted By New Photo I.D., Citizenship And Registration Laws

According to a new report, over five million voters could be denied the right to vote under new laws adopted in a dozen states.

The study released Sunday night by the Brennan Center for Justice in New York said that new laws regarding photo identification requirements for voting, eliminating same day voter registration in several states, requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote, changing requirements for voter registration drives, reducing early voting days and restoring the right to vote for convicted felons will make voting harder for the five million people in the 2012 election.

The Brennan Center wrote that there has been a partisan divide in terms of the new laws, noting that the laws had mainly been generated from Republican-controlled state legislatures and signed by Republican governors. The exceptions are laws passed by Democratic-controlled legislatures in Rhode Island and West Virginia, signed by an independent governor in Rhode Island and West Virginia’s Democratic acting governor.

Pentagon chief in bid to defuse Egypt-Israel tensions

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta was headed to Cairo from Tel Aviv on Tuesday in an effort to defuse tensions between Egypt and Israel that have mounted since the end of Hosni Mubarak's rule.
Before flying out after a one-day visit to Israel, Panetta said he will seek to encourage both sides to ease friction over the Sinai and will ask Egypt's military rulers to release an alleged Israeli spy.
Ilan Grapel, a US-Israeli dual national, is accused of spying for Israel and has been in custody since June 12 but Israeli officials say it is all a mistake.
Speaking to reporters in Tel Aviv on Monday, Panetta said he hoped Grapel would be released but did not say whether the accused would be freed during his visit to Cairo as reported by some media.

POLICE VS. PROTESTERS

In a tense showdown above the East River, the police arrested more than 700 demonstrators from the Occupy Wall Street protests who took to the roadway as they tried to cross the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

The police said it was the marchers’ choice that led to the enforcement action.

“Protesters who used the Brooklyn Bridge walkway were not arrested,” Paul J. Browne, the chief spokesman for the New York Police Department, said. “Those who took over the Brooklyn-bound roadway, and impeded vehicle traffic, were arrested.”
“The cops watched and did nothing, indeed, seemed to guide us onto the roadway,” said Jesse A. Myerson, a media coordinator for Occupy Wall Street who marched but was not arrested.

"The deputy, just by looking at his face, knew who he was," Sheriff's Office spokesman Elias Johnson told The Huffington Post. "He's been in our custody so many times we knew exactly who it was even before we ran his [information through a database].

Nova to pick up where CC left off in Game 1

In preparing to start Game 2 of the American League Division Series, Ivan Nova spent time this week watching game film of frequent No. 2 starter Andy Pettitte.

Turns out Nova will be a Game 1 pitcher, instead.

The suspension of Friday's ALDS Game 1 at Yankee Stadium means that instead of starting Game 2, Nova will pick up where CC Sabathia left off in Game 1. The right-hander will take the mound in the third inning against the Tigers at 8:37 p.m. ET on TBS, and proceed from there.
