Nobel peace prize for Arab Spring

The Norwegian Nobel Committee gives no clues ahead of the October 7 announcement, but judging by previous selections, the rebellion sweeping across North Africa and the Middle East would appear to tick all the right boxes.

The challenge would be to identify a person or group that embodies the non-violent spirit of the revolution .

"It's particularly hard in the context of these protests where there hasn't always been an identifiable leadership," said Kristian Berg Harpviken, the director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, and a prominent voice in the Nobel guessing game.

India warns against hurry in troop withdrawal from Afghanistan

Expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, India today warned against any "hurry" in withdrawing troops from the country, saying such a move should be done keeping in mind the ground realities and not just to meet any deadline.

"For peace, stability and security in Afghanistan, it is imperative that the ongoing transition must be linked to the ground realities rather than rigid timetables. This, the international community in its hurry to withdraw from a combat role in Afghanistan, will ignore at its own peril," India's Permanent Representative to the UN Hardeep Singh Puri said.

But for now, the Congress and the Government are waiting for the Supreme Court decision on Tuesday and also for the Prime Minister's return late on Tuesday evening.
As the Congress goes into a huddle to defend Chidambaram in the 2G case, politically it will be seen as putting a strong legal defence in favour of the Home Minister in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
The Supreme Court will resume hearing the petition that seeks a CBI inquiry against Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum scam.

In Syria, defectors form dissident army in sign uprising may be entering new phase

A group of defectors calling themselves the Free Syrian Army is attempting the first effort to organize an armed challenge to President Bashar al-Assad’s rule, signaling what some hope and others fear may be a new phase in what has been an overwhelmingly peaceful Syrian protest movement.

For now, the shadowy entity seems mostly to consist of some big ambitions, a Facebook page and a relatively small number of defected soldiers and officers who have taken refuge on the borderlands of Turkey and Lebanon or among civilians in Syria’s cities.

On West Coast, Obama makes fundraising push

President Obama opened a West Coast fundraising blitz Sunday with appearances at four events in Seattle and San Jose as his reelection campaign sought to make up ground after a series of summer setbacks.
Obama told donors at Shirley’s residence that electing a Republican president would usher in “an approach to government that would fundamentally cripple America in meeting the challenges of the 21st century,” and he cited the budget debate in Congress as part of “a constant ideological pushback” that his agenda has encountered since he took office.

He said the 2012 election will be “especially hard, because a lot of people are discouraged,” but he vowed to “keep drawing a clear contrast” between his vision and that of the GOP.

How bad was monument damaged?

Engineers enlisted by the National Park Service to inspect and coordinate the repair of the earthquake-damaged Washington Monument haven't yet forecast a date it will reopen, but WTOP has learned plans are being made to winterize the 555-foot stone obelisk.

Carol Johnson, a spokesperson with the National Park Service, says the engineering firm has finished its assessment of the damage to the monument's interior, but not its exterior, from the Aug. 23 earthquake that shook the region.

"They're putting together a report on that as we speak," Johnson says.

Four exterior stones near the tip of the monument were initially found to be cracked, but rains from Hurricane Irene leaked through softened mortar and caused several cracks, along with minor flooding inside the structure.

"We're now planning what the next stage will be," says Johnson. "As of now we do not have a reopening date."

NASA says defunct satellite could fall in U.S. after all

NASA said on Friday that pieces of the defunct Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, known as UARS, could land in the United States after all.

UARS has been inoperative for almost six years and has slowly been losing altitude due to Earth's gravity. NASA now predicts that re-entry will occur between late Friday and early Saturday morning.

"There is a low probability any debris that survives re-entry will land in the United States, but the possibility cannot be discounted because of this changing rate of descent," NASA said in a statement at 10:45 a.m. Eastern time. "It is still too early to predict the time and location of re-entry with any certainty, but predictions will become more refined in the next 12 to 18 hours."

South Sudan: MSF condemns large scale attacks on civilians

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has treated over 100 patients in the town of Pieri and referred another 57 to hospitals in Leer and Nasir following last week’s raid on the town of Pieri and twelve surrounding villages in Jonglei State, South Sudan. The majority of the referred cases were women and children with gunshot wounds.

Several hundreds of people – including women and children - are believed to have been killed in last Thursday’s dawn attack. Hundreds more are reportedly wounded. Numbers of deaths and wounded are difficult to confirm. However, villagers report to MSF staff members that over 400 people have been killed in Pieri alone, and almost half of the houses in the town have been destroyed.

At least one of MSF’s South Sudanese staff members is confirmed to have been killed together with all of her household members. Another staff member reported that he has had to bury 16 members of his family as a result of the violence. A further 17 of MSF's South Sudanese staff still remain unaccounted for. The organisation’s compound and clinic have also been targeted by the raiders, who looted medical equipment, drugs and other valuable items and burned down parts of the MSF facilities.

Rick Perry's Sudden Fall Due To Unforced Errors

Just a few weeks ago, the Texas governor was taking the Republican presidential primary by storm, but his star has fallen rapidly over the course of his first three debates. On Thursday night, it came crashing down.

Conservatives flocked to the three-day conclave here – kicked off by the Google-Fox News debate Thursday night – "ready to marry" Perry, but left "spooked" by his performance, said one Florida Republican with contacts among both campaign operatives and grassroots activists.

That discontent has been building, though it's not final in any sense. Perry's fortunes have fallen in large part because of a series of gaffes that demonstrated his lack of discipline and experience on a national stage. In several key moments during the past few weeks, the governor showed a tendency to undermine some of his best moments and to make tough or difficult moments even worse. His potential supporters have grown leery of Perry as the list of his unforced errors has grown longer.

Einstein's theory in a spin as neutrinos pass speed of light

NEW YORK: The physics world is abuzz with news that a group of European physicists has clocked a burst of subatomic particles known as neutrinos breaking the cosmic speed limit - the speed of light - that was set by Albert Einstein in 1905. If true, it is a result that would change the world. But that ''if'' is enormous.

Even before the physicists had presented their results at a seminar at CERN, the European Centre for Nuclear Research, near Geneva, yesterday, a chorus of physicists had risen up on blogs and elsewhere arguing that it was way too soon to give up on Einstein and that there was probably some experimental error. Incredible claims require incredible evidence.

NASA Reports Re-Entry of Defunct Satellite

After days of suspense about where the final remnants of a defunct, 13,000-pound U.S. climate satellite would land on Earth, early Saturday NASA said the wreckage had plunged through the atmosphere but that the agency was still working to confirm "the precise re-entry time and location."

In its latest update, NASA said Pentagon trackers had determined the satellite "penetrated the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean" between 11:23 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Sept. 23 and and 1:09 a.m on Sept. 24.

The announcement capped hours of uncertainty about the precise trajectory of the fiery re-entry, as atmospheric conditions and other factors changed the tumbling satellite's speed and orbit. Those shifts, in turn, prompted NASA experts to reassess their predictions of likely impact areas

Without identifying where some parts may have landed, NASA said the satellite was passing on an easterly course over Canada and Africa during the final phases of its descent, as well as over vast oceanic regions.

NASA Says Satellite Falls to Earth Over Pacific Ocean Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/09/23/huge-tumbling-satellite-expected-to-fall-t

NASA's dead six-ton satellite fell to Earth early Saturday morning, starting its fiery death plunge somewhere over the vast Pacific Ocean.
Details were still sketchy, but the U.S. Air Force's Joint Space Operations Center and NASA say that the bus-sized satellite first penetrated Earth's atmosphere somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. That doesn't necessarily mean it all fell into the sea. NASA's calculations had predicted that the former climate research satellite would fall over a 500-mile swath.
The two government agencies say the 35-foot satellite fell sometime between 11:23 p.m. EDT and 1:09 a.m. EDT. NASA said it didn't know the precise time or location yet
Some 26 pieces of the satellite - representing 1,200 pounds of heavy metal - were expected to rain down somewhere. The biggest surviving chunk should be no more than 300 pounds.
The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite is the biggest NASA spacecraft to crash back to Earth, uncontrolled, since the post-Apollo 75-ton Skylab space station and the more than 10-ton Pegasus 2 satellite, both in 1979.

Yet, from his safe houses and mountain redoubts, the guerrilla commander has directed some of the most brazen attacks against U.S. forces in Afghanistan, and is now seen as one of the most dangerous warlords in the Taliban insurgency.

The Haqqani network is a "veritable arm" of the ISI, and the agency was in contact with the group during last week's startling attack on the American embassy in Kabul, Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a U.S. Senate committee on Thursday.

Arizona Church Is A Brothel

Arizona prosecutors have charged more than 30 people affiliated with the Phoenix Goddess Temple, a 10,000-square-foot alleged brothel that had been operating under the pretense of providing "religious" services for hundreds of dollars in cash "donations," police said.

"They were committing crimes under the guise of religious freedom," Phoenix police spokesman Steve Martos said. "It's a sad situation when people are trying to hide behind religion and church to commit a crime."

The "temple" had been operating in Phoenix since 2009, but authorities didn't become aware of it until residents began complaining. After a local newspaper visited the alleged brothel and published an in-depth story, police launched a six-month investigation culminating in the arrest of 18 people Wednesday. They are still hunting down the other 19.

Police obtained a search warrant after initiating several undercover deals and determining that the Temple Goddess employees had been trained to use evasive vocabulary.

“For example, ‘johns’ were not ‘johns.’ They were called ‘seekers.’ Sexual intercourse was called ‘sacred union,’” Martos said.

The “temple” featured themed rooms in spaces that had once been individual offices. Martos said one of the rooms had a “water theme” with a whirlpool and waves painted on the walls. Another had been decorated with Egyptian-themed artwork.
